When a Freemason first considers the idea of becoming a Secretary, it’s not too far into a Google Search before he comes across ‘The Complete Lodge Secretary’, by Gordon Hunt.
The book is written to assist the Lodge Secretary in fulfilling his role, giving practical advice on everything from initially taking on the role to the eventual handover to a successor. Hunt touches on a wide variety of topics; admitting new Members, preparing and managing Events, interacting with Provincial Grand Lodges and Grand Lodges, activities during meetings… and much more. The book is also peppered with useful tables, checklists and bullet points to assist the Secretary along the way.
Hunt’s writing is clear and easy to digest, for which the reader is grateful considering the density of the topic.
“The Complete Lodge Secretary” is well laid out, whether for reading all at once or as a reference manual.
One aspect of note in “The Complete Lodge Secretary” is the focus on new technologies, which closely aligns with our own beliefs in regards to Freemasonry embracing electronic tools to enhance the Craft. In the book Hunt particularly explores the role of communication technologies and their impact for the Secretary.
As well as suiting Craft or Blue Lodge Secretaries, the principles contained in the book can be widely applied to any Masonic Order or Secretarial role.
As for Hunt himself, he boasts a rich depth of experience from his own Masonic career which is clearly evident in his writing.
I would highly recommend “The Complete Lodge Secretary” to anyone in the role or exploring the possibility of taking on the role in the future. It serves as an insightful guide, and would be invaluable tool for anyone taking on the role anew (especially in the absence of a thorough handover from a predecessor).
A great Lodge needs a great Secretary, and “The Complete Lodge Secretary” will help Brothers fulfil this vital position.
